11.9. Removal, check and installation of the brake drum

Removal

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. In the presence take off a wheel cap, then weaken bolts of fastening of a back wheel.
2. Lift a back part of the car and record on supports.
3. Remove a back wheel.
4. Release the emergency brake.
5. Unscrew the screw of fastening of the brake drum and remove the brake drum.
6. If the brake drum is kept by brake shoes, remove a cap from an opening in a brake board and, using the screw-driver, move a control lever of the emergency brake to a brake shoe in order that brake shoes departed from a drum.

Check

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Being careful, clear the internal surface of the brake drum of brake dust and dirt.
2. Clear the external surface of the brake drum and check for obvious signs of wear or damage, and also existence of cracks around openings under bolts of fastening of a wheel.
3. If necessary replace a drum.
4. Check an internal part of the brake drum. Insignificant development of a drum from action of brake shoes is the normal phenomenon. The repoint of a drum is not recommended.

Installation

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. At installation of the new brake drum remove a sheeting layer from its surface.
2. Check and, if necessary, clear the interfaced surfaces of the brake drum and a nave.
3. Reduce length of an adjusting level of brake shoes, rotating an adjusting wheel of a level.
4. Install the brake drum and fix it by the screw.
5. Several times press a brake pedal to put the mechanism of adjustment of a gap of brake shoes in action.
6. If necessary adjust the emergency brake.
7. Establish a wheel and lower the car.
8. Tighten bolts of fastening of a wheel the required moment.
