8.1.2. Check of system of ignition

Prevention

At work on system of ignition it is necessary to be careful with the included ignition as it is possible to receive blow by current from a high-voltage part of system of ignition. People with stimulators of warm activity are not recommended to check and make repair of system of ignition. Switch off ignition before a detachment or connection of any element of system of ignition or probes of the measuring device.

The main malfunctions of system of ignition are caused by easing or oxidation of contacts, or short circuit on the mass of high voltage because of pollution, humidity or damage of isolation of high-voltage wires. Before drawing a conclusion on malfunction of any element in system of ignition, check a condition of wires or electric chains of system of ignition.

THE ENGINE IS NOT STARTED

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. If at start of the engine the bent shaft of the engine is not turned or turned very slowly, check a state and accumulator charging and a starter.
2. Connect voltmeter probes to plugs of the accumulator and disconnect the central high-voltage wire from a cover of the distributor of ignition and connect it to weight.
3. Include a starter no more than for 10 seconds and measure tension on the accumulator.
4. If during the work of a starter tension becomes less, than 9,5 B, check a condition of the accumulator, a starter and system of charging.
5. If at start of the engine the bent shaft rotates with a normal speed, using a stroboscope, check a high-voltage part of system of ignition.
6. If at start of the engine the stroboscope blinks, so high voltage moves to spark plugs and it is necessary to check a condition of spark plugs.
7. If the stroboscope does not blink, check the central high-voltage wire going from the ignition coil to a distributor cover, coal contact and a rotor of the distributor.
8. Also existence of a spark can be checked, having removed a high-voltage wire from a spark plug and having fixed it so that between the end of a wire and the block of cylinders of the engine there was a gap about 6 mm. The wire can be held the tool with the isolated handles.
9. Turn the engine a starter and check existence of a blue spark between a wire and the block of cylinders of the engine.
10. If the spark is present, check a state and operability of fuel system.
11. If the spark still did not appear, disconnect the central high-voltage wire from an ignition distributor cover, and fix it so that between the end of a wire and the block of cylinders of the engine there was a gap about 6 mm. The wire can be held the tool with the isolated handles.
12. Turn the engine a starter and check existence of a blue spark between a wire and the block of cylinders of the engine.
13. Existence of a spark specifies that the coil of ignition is serviceable, and faulty, perhaps, the ignition distributor cover, a distributor rotor are, or wear of coal contact or a spring of coal contact in an ignition distributor cover is the reason.
14. If the spark still did not appear, check reliability of connection of wires to the ignition coil. Perhaps also oxidation of wires of the distributor of ignition.
15. Clear contacts and repeatedly make check of system of ignition.
16. Using additional wires, connect the voltmeter or a control lamp between a wire of giving of tension to the ignition coil (disconnected from the coil) and weight.
17. Lack of tension indicates damage of an electric chain of giving of tension to the ignition coil from the ignition lock.
18. Disconnect the condenser and check presence of tension between mobile contact of the breaker and weight.
19. If tension is present, so the condenser failed.
20. If tension is absent, check presence of tension between the weight and the plug of the coil of ignition with the wire going to the distributor.
21. Presence of tension indicates break of the wire connecting the coil of ignition and the distributor of ignition.
22. Lack of tension indicates malfunction of the coil of ignition.

ADMISSIONS OF IGNITION

Unsystematic admissions of ignition can be caused by the weakened contacts, a rupture of a chain in a control system of ignition or in a chain of primary winding of the coil of ignition, damage of high-voltage wires.

PERFORMANCE ORDER
1. Switch off ignition and check that contacts on electric sockets of system of ignition pure and without corrosion traces.
2. Check that the ignition coil, a cover of the distributor of ignition and high-voltage wires pure and dry.
3. Check a condition of electric wires of spark plugs.
4. Then check an ignition distributor cover, coal contact and a rotor of the distributor of ignition.
5. Check of spark plugs can be made serial replacement of spark plugs by new.
6. Constant admissions of ignition are caused, most likely, by defects in an ignition distributor cover, the ignition coil, high-voltage wires or spark plugs. For check of giving of high voltage to spark plugs it is possible to use a stroboscope.
7. Lack of tension only on one high-voltage wire demonstrates damage of this wire or cover of the distributor of ignition.
8. If tension is present at all high-voltage wires, so spark plugs are faulty.
9. At total absence of high voltage check a secondary winding of the coil of ignition which can be damaged.
10. If at system of ignition there are malfunctions which cannot be eliminated independently, it is necessary to address on service station.

PRECAUTIONS

When working on electric system not to damage semiconductor devices (diodes and transistors), it is necessary to fulfill the following requirements:

  – in operating time of the engine do not disconnect the accumulator, the generator of alternating current or any electric sockets;
  – when carrying out any works remove the negative plug from the accumulator;
  – when carrying out electrowelding works on the car switch-off the generator of alternating current and the electronic control device;
  – do not allow operation of the engine with the generator disconnected from electric system;
  – do not check operability of the generator, closing its output contacts on weight.
