7.3. Accumulator

If you are going to keep operability of the battery throughout the longest period of time, follow the following rules:

At the idle engine switch off all electric devices in the car.

Begin disconnection of the battery from network of the car with a negative wire.

Each 15–20 days (through 2 500 km of a run) wipe the accumulator from dirt in order to avoid its self-discharge. With the same purpose it is necessary to eliminate begin to flow electrolyte and to isolate a fixing frame from the case.

The accumulator has to be reliably fixed on the car. You watch that plugs of wires were strongly fixed on accumulator conclusions, otherwise explosion is possible.

The accumulator can continuously work in the starter mode no more than 15 seconds; the break between cycles has to make not less than 60 seconds.

Periodically check the voltmeter tension developed by the relay regulator. Readings need to be taken directly on accumulator plugs at the working heated-up engine. The size of tension has to keep within range from 13,8 to 14,5 Volts.

On the served accumulators it is desirable to check the level and density of electrolyte through each 3 000 km. Level of electrolyte is checked on a special mark in transparent cases or by means of a special glass tube in opaque cases. Electrolyte has to close the upper edge of plates on 10–15 mm. Density of electrolyte is checked by means of the areometer. If density became below value of 1,23 g/cm3 in the winter and 1,19 g/cm3 in the summer, recharge is necessary.

Even if the generator and the regulator of tension are serviceable, and the level of electrolyte is normal, recharge by means of the charger is necessary once a month in the winter and each 6 months in other seasons.

The accumulator which is filled in with electrolyte can be stored only completely loaded, at the same time density of electrolyte has to be checked once a month.

Several councils

Accumulator charging is made the current making exactly 0,1 from nominal capacity. For example, the accumulator with a capacity of 50 And / needs to be charged with current with a force of 5 And at the unscrewed traffic jams of jellied openings h.

You should not fill in in the accumulator electrolyte with specific weight more than 1,28 g/cm3. Trying to increase thus starting current, you in a short period will put the accumulator out of action. For the same reason it is possible to bring electrolyte level to norm only the distilled water.

In the opaque served battery the level of electrolyte can be measured by means of a hollow glass tubule, having closed one its end a finger. In the taken "sample" liquid column height in a tube will correspond to height of excess of level of electrolyte over the upper edge of plates.

It is necessary to remove begin to flow electrolyte or to neutralize a possibility of impact of electrolyte on surrounding objects; it is possible to make it by means of 10 percent solution of sal ammoniac or soda.

Operation of the discharged battery, especially is not allowed in the winter.

In the discharged accumulator the water percent in electrolyte is too high. Electrolyte can freeze and put the accumulator case out of action. Do not try to charge the frozen accumulator with big current or to start the car from a foreign source, Let's the accumulator thaw, and then try to restore it by charging current of small force – and it still can serve.

Crack in bank of the served accumulator – not always the reason of its replacement. Pour out electrolyte, dry up and wash out gasoline a crack then process it a file. Mix the sawdust formed when cutting a crack with epoxy glue or filling. Carefully cover with the received structure a crack. After this procedure fill in electrolyte not earlier than in 24 hours.
